about

RKIII grew out of a simple ideal: put three musicians of similar vision together, have them enter, as one unit, the space from which creativity and art emerge spontaneously, and then capture the results.

"Modern Improv" is RKIII’s attempt to embody that ideal. Part pure improvisation (many of the tracks were written and recorded live, in the moment), and part composition, it is an album that seeks to stretch the bounds of music and creativity through improvisation and modern technology.

It is immediately accessible- the roots of jazz, blues, soul, hip hop and rock are all clearly apparent. They combine to form the elegant melodies, driving bass lines and pulsing, layered rhythms that are the core of the music.

And even as these familiar elements lure and seduce the listener, "Modern Improv" offers a clear challenge to “grow our ears”; to actively reach out and meet the modern sounds and textures; to step into the space of improvisation and creation; to move into the unknown, outcome undetermined, and touch the thrill and satisfaction of being part of something fresh and purely creative.

In our modern culture of speed, instant gratification and over-production, it is a refreshing space to inhabit. The listener can let go and allow the melodies, harmonies and rhythms to develop at their own pace, spontaneously, and be in on the surprise and exhilaration when they emerge as a composition before their eyes (and ears). As such, "Modern Improv", and RKIII, is music for “listeners”: those who still enjoy music for the music, not as background noise or filler. It is music for those who still love the excitement of live shows that are “alive”. It is music that one can be a part of, not just watch. It is Modern Improv.
